Abstract:  From the Soil is one of the masterpieces of the world-renowned Chinese sociologist Fei Xiaotong. This classic work offers deep insights into the structure and features of China's grassroots society in areas such as rural culture, rural education, family systems, power structure, and social change. “Reading the whole book” implies studying books in an in-depth and comprehensive manner. This presentation will share how the “reading the whole book” scheme can be devised and implemented.

This academic work, which has been regarded as “idyllic”, will help to enhance the language ability of secondary school students, build up their reading habit and increase their understanding of Chinese society. It also plays an important role in promoting cultural transmission, and developing readers’ thinking and language skills, which are integral to their essay writing.
