About the Session

About the Session

Abstract: Yew Chung International School has a history of over 90 years of exemplary early childhood education in Hong Kong and now a 30-year history in Shanghai. YCIS is known for its high-quality early childhood program that promotes a global lens and multilingualism through an emergent curriculum. This presentation details the Twelve Values that exemplify the approach, including relationships, the emergent curriculum, inquiry-based pedagogy, and the multilingual and multicultural approach. Teachers and children work together as children become cross-cultural practitioners who act for a better world. The Twelve Values together describe the philosophy of the Yew Chung Approach that has evolved over the last 90 years and will continue to evolve to support the needs of a changing global society.

Biography

Dr Stephanie C. Sanders-Smith

Associate Professor of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Yew Chung – Bernard Spodek Scholar in Early Childhood Education, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Lead author of the book The Yew Chung Approach to Early Childhood Education

Dr Stephanie C. Sanders-Smith’s research addresses ongoing dialogues regarding culturally sustaining practices in early childhood education. Through adopting sociological and theoretical lenses, she addresses questions about relationships between teachers and children and between teachers and families, as well as how these relationships are affected by socio-cultural context and school philosophy. Her research specifically targets relationships that result in the recognition of the rights and perspectives of children in educational experiences.

Her research follows two lines of inquiry: The first line of inquiry utilises the work of Bernstein and Dewey to examine the ways how teachers in schools employ philosophies of progressive early education in supporting democratic relationships with children as well as learning. Her second line of inquiry, through using the Bourdieusian lens, examines family engagement, how teachers build non-hierarchical relationships with families, teachers’ dispositions for engagement, and barriers to relationships between teachers and families.
